If you’ve ever shopped for extra-wide or extra-long curtains, you know they can cost a small fortune! But what if I told you there’s a budget-friendly way to dress those big windows? It can have a high impact without breaking the bank. Enter painter’s tarps—the secret weapon of creative decorators everywhere. With a little bleaching, you can create a custom look. Add some softening to bring a high-end feel. Do all of this for a fraction of the price with strategic hanging.

Why Painter’s Tarps?

Cotton drop cloths, also known as painter’s tarps, are durable. They have a gorgeous linen-like texture. They come in oversized dimensions, which are perfect for large windows! They also drape beautifully once softened, giving you that effortlessly chic, high-end designer feel.

How to Bleach Cotton Tarps for Softness & Whiteness

Most painter’s tarps come in a natural beige or oatmeal color, which can be gorgeous if you love warm neutrals. But if you prefer a soft white, French country, or modern farmhouse look, bleaching is the way to go!

Here’s How to Do It:

1️⃣ Choose the Right Tarps. Make sure that you get 100% cotton, uncoated drop cloths. Mine was a cotton and polyester blend. It did not lighten as much as 100% cotton would. Some have a water-resistant finish that won’t bleach properly.

2️⃣ Prep Your Bleach Bath – Fill a large tub with hot water. Alternatively, use a bucket or your stainless steel washer tub. Add 2–4 cups of bleach. Adjust the amount depending on the level of whiteness you want. Stir well.

3️⃣ Soak & Stir – Submerge your tarps completely. Let them soak for 6–12 hours. Stir occasionally to make sure even bleaching.

4️⃣ Rinse & Wash – Drain the bleach water. Then, wash your tarps in a washing machine with detergent. Add a cup of vinegar to neutralize any remaining bleach.

5️⃣ Dry & Soften – Toss them in the dryer with wool dryer balls. You can also use tennis balls to break up stiffness. Once dry, you’ll have soft, airy curtains that feel like expensive linen!

How to Hang Tarps High for Drama

To create a sense of grandeur in any room, hang your curtains high and wide. This makes windows look bigger and ceilings taller!

Mount Curtain Rods at Least 6–12 Inches Above the Window Frame – The higher, the better!

Extend Rods 8–12 Inches Beyond the Window. This makes your windows feel larger. It allows more natural light in when the curtains are open.

Use Clip Rings for Effortless Hanging – No sewing required! Just clip the tarp to rings for a relaxed, flowing drape.

Creating a Cohesive Look Throughout Your Home

For a polished, designer feel, keep your curtains uniform in color and hanging height throughout your space. Even with different window sizes, keep the curtain style and height the same. This will visually connect each room. It will make everything feel cohesive.

Pro Tip: If your tarps aren’t quite long enough, extend them. Sew a band of coordinating fabric at the bottom. You can also use hot-glue for this. This will create a custom two-tone effect!
